Mr. Alex St John

MA, RP (Trainee)
Therapist

Many of the people I work with feel stuck in painful patterns they cannot seem to change. They may be struggling with addiction, the effects of trauma, or identity related concerns, and often feel ashamed, overwhelmed, or unsure where to turn.

In our work together, I slow things down and meet you exactly where you are. I draw on an integrated, client centered approach that includes Narrative Therapy, Somatic Psychotherapy, EMDR, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy, Trauma Focused CBT, and Gottman informed couples work. We pay attention to the patterns and beliefs that are keeping you stuck, and we explore safer ways to cope, process trauma, and make sense of your story in a way that honours your values.

My goal is for therapy to feel like a steady, grounded place where you can be honest, feel understood, and slowly build a different relationship with yourself. Over time, clients often notice more stability, greater self- awareness, and the ability to make choices that align with who they want to be. Together we work toward increased resilience, more satisfying relationships, and a life that feels less driven by shame and more guided by clarity and care.

At Guidepoint Clinic, I am doing a supervised placement as part of my additional training, which means all my work is supervised by a registered psychologist. Receipts for insurance will be issued under the name of my supervisor.

On a Personal Note

Quiet, unhurried time is usually what settles me. Being near water, lifting weights or moving through a yoga practice, and sharing a simple meal with people I care about all help me come back to myself when life feels crowded or loud.

Outside of sessions, I gravitate toward movement and creativity. Strength training and yoga help me reset, and I enjoy exploring different corners of the city, usually with a good coffee in hand. I value humour, curiosity, and honesty in my own life, and those same qualities tend to show up in the therapy room as well.

Alex is a Registered Psychotherapist with more than sixteen years of experience in the fields of addiction, trauma, and mental health. His background includes individual, couple, and group work with adults navigating substance use, compulsive sexual behaviour, gambling and technology related concerns, as well as mood and personality related difficulties. He holds a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology and is a Certified Sexual Addiction Therapist Supervisor, which reflects his training in working with complex addictive patterns and their impact on partners and relationships.

Alongside his clinical work, he is engaged in further graduate training in psychology, which supports his interest in assessment, integrated treatment planning, and evidence informed care. Across roles and settings, a consistent thread has been helping people make sense of experiences that may feel stigmatized, frightening, or hard to talk about, while maintaining a firm focus on safety, accountability, and long-term change.
