How Therapy Can Help Prevent a Crisis Before It Happens

September 10, 2025

Every year on September 10, the world comes together to recognize World Suicide Prevention Day, a time to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and offer hope. But suicide prevention isn’t only about intervention when someone is in crisis — it’s also about taking proactive steps before things reach a breaking point. In my work as a therapist, I’ve seen how powerful it can be when people seek support before they reach a breaking point.

Therapy is not only for emergencies. It can be a proactive way to care for your mental health — helping you recognize early warning signs, process emotions, and build coping strategies that reduce the risk of a crisis later.

Understanding the Importance of Early Support

Mental health struggles often don’t appear overnight. They build slowly — a few weeks of poor sleep, feeling more irritable than usual, or withdrawing from people you normally enjoy. Over time, these small changes can add up to something heavier.

Therapy provides a safe, non-judgmental space to:

  • Recognize warning signs early — identifying changes in mood, thoughts, or behaviours before they intensify.
  • Process difficult emotions — reducing the sense of isolation and shame that can come with mental health struggles.
  • Develop healthy coping strategies — equipping you with tools to manage stress, anxiety, or depression.
  • Strengthen connections — helping rebuild relationships and support systems, which are vital for long-term well-being.

Common Warning Signs That Therapy Can Address

You don’t have to wait until life feels unmanageable to reach out. In fact, many of my clients come in with concerns that might look “minor” from the outside – things like:

  • Persistent sadness or hopelessness
  • Withdrawal from friends, family, or activities
  • Increased anxiety, irritability, or anger
  • Sleep disturbances or significant changes in appetite
  • Feeling like a burden or struggling to find purpose

These may feel small at first, but catching them early can prevent them from snowballing into a crisis.

How Therapy Supports Suicide Prevention

Therapy isn’t about “fixing” people. It’s about walking alongside them, helping them find their strengths, and creating safety when things feel overwhelming.

At Guidepoint Clinic, our experienced therapists help individuals:

  • Create a personalized safety plan — identifying triggers, coping strategies, and crisis resources.
  • Build resilience — developing the tools needed to manage difficult emotions and life transitions.
  • Reframe negative thoughts — learning how to challenge unhelpful beliefs and create space for hope.
  • Re-establish control — empowering you to regain a sense of agency over their lives and decisions.

I often say that therapy can be “a pause button”. That pause can give you space to regroup, reflect, and move forward with a stronger sense of self.

When to Reach Out

You don’t need to wait until you’ve “hit rock bottom.” If you’ve noticed changes in your mood, relationships, or ability to cope, talking to a therapist can make a meaningful difference.

At Guidepoint Clinic, we offer virtual therapy across Ontario and Newfoundland & Labrador, making it easier than ever to get confidential, compassionate support from home.
